  • No. The New Horizons Band of Austin is a non-audition ensemble. We welcome musicians of all skill levels, from those who haven't touched their instrument in thirty years to those who play every day. Our philosophy is "Music for Life," focusing on the joy of playing rather than the pressure of a chair test.

  • Absolutely. Many of our members are "re-entry" musicians who played in high school or college and took a long break for careers and family. You will find a supportive environment where your section-mates are happy to help you get back up to speed.

  • We are a standard concert band and wind ensemble. We welcome all traditional woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments as well as select strings and keyboards.

  • The New Horizons Band of Austin is primarily oriented toward adults age 50 and older, and most of our members are in that stage of life. However, we welcome adult musicians of any age who are interested in joining our friendly, no-audition ensemble.

  • We rehearse on Thursdays from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Our primary rehearsal home is the Tarrytown United Methodist Church, located at 2601 Exposition Blvd, Austin, TX 78703.

  • $20 per quarter. We strive to keep participation accessible to everyone. Membership dues help cover the cost of our rehearsal space, sheet music, insurance, and communications. Our director generously serves on a volunteer basis.

  • No. Membership in NHIMA is completely optional.

  • Yes, members (other than percussion) are expected to provide their own instruments and a folding music stand for rehearsals and performances. If you are looking to rent or purchase an instrument in the Austin area, we are happy to provide recommendations for local shops that support our band.

  • Yes. Our concerts are free and open to the public.
